Overview
With bright white walls and black dome majestic, grand mosque 130 years old is an incredible site. This is where hundreds of people were displaced during the 2014 tsunami that flattened most of the city landscape. Extremely destructive tsunami, it destroys every structure, old and new, along the road swell torn. It is a fact that gives meaning to the Baiturrahman Mosque in Banda Aceh. It is more than just a work of Islamic architecture in this state, the survival of the tsunami is seen by many residents as a direct intervention of God.
Royal Bible says that the mosque was first built of wood in 1612 under the reign of Sultan Iskandar Muda. Some say that it was built earlier in 1292 by Sultan Alaidin Mahmudsyah. During the war in Aceh in 1873, the mosque was burned to the ground. Recognizing the value and importance to the people of Aceh, in 1879, Major General Vander acting as current military generals, rebuilt the mosque as he had been promised by the Governor-General Van Lansberge in 1877. Two of the dome was added by the Netherlands in 1936 and the other two by Indonesian government in 1957.
Baiturrahman Grand Mosque is located in the center of the city of Banda Aceh. Marked with a tower 35 meters, 7 large dome and 7 towers, which Baiturrahman probably the prototype for many mosques in Indonesia and Peninsular Malaysia; replacing the roof of the mosque layered style.
