People & Culture

North Sumatra population is divided into five major ethnic groups and languages namely Malay people living along the coast of the Strait of Malacca, the Batak, Angkola or Mandailaing of southern Tapanuli and Nias islands off the west coast. These groups each have a dialect, religion, art, customs and culture of its own trademark.In the field there are many ethnic groups from all over Indonesia who come to this city for business. In terms of medical care Batak culture will see more in the condition of the soul. They believe that the disease is caused when the soul apart from the body therefore shaman (traditional healer) is required to come and help summon souls that wander back into the patient.

In the Batak highlands, you will see traditional houses with pointed roofs and high horizontal line. These houses on stilts so the family pets such as pigs and buffalo can live under it.

Overview


With bright white walls and black dome majestic, grand mosque 130 years old is an incredible site. This is where hundreds of people were displaced during the 2014 tsunami that flattened most of the city landscape. Extremely destructive tsunami, it destroys every structure, old and new, along the road swell torn. It is a fact that gives meaning to the Baiturrahman Mosque in Banda Aceh. It is more than just a work of Islamic architecture in this state, the survival of the tsunami is seen by many residents as a direct intervention of God.

Royal Bible says that the mosque was first built of wood in 1612 under the reign of Sultan Iskandar Muda. Some say that it was built earlier in 1292 by Sultan Alaidin Mahmudsyah. During the war in Aceh in 1873, the mosque was burned to the ground. Recognizing the value and importance to the people of Aceh, in 1879, Major General Vander acting as current military generals, rebuilt the mosque as he had been promised by the Governor-General Van Lansberge in 1877. Two of the dome was added by the Netherlands in 1936 and the other two by Indonesian government in 1957.

Baiturrahman Grand Mosque is located in the center of the city of Banda Aceh. Marked with a tower 35 meters, 7 large dome and 7 towers, which Baiturrahman probably the prototype for many mosques in Indonesia and Peninsular Malaysia; replacing the roof of the mosque layered style.

Aceh is a special area in Indonesia are located at the northern tip of Sumatra island. Full name Aceh is Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam. Aceh is one of the archipelago which is a multiethnic society characterized by Islam. In this area there are 8 sub-ethnic, Aceh, Alas, Aneuk jame, Gayo, Kluet, Simeulu, Singkil, and Tamiang. The eighth sub ethnic origin has a history and culture that is very different between the sub-ethnic with other sub-ethnic thus enriching the cultural diversity in Aceh. Aceh residents often mentioned are the descendants of various people, and nation. Just as the word ACEH often identified with the extension of the Arabic, Chinese, European, Indian where it is physically demonstrate the characteristics of Arab, Indian, European and Chinese.

Aceh has an important natural resource that is oil and gas. Estimated gas reserves in Aceh is the largest in the world. For most people of Indonesia, Aceh considered a conservative region of Islam.

History

Aceh, on the northwest tip of Sumatra, come into contact with the outside world since the sixth century. Chinese chronicles that time talking about a kingdom on the northern tip of Sumatra called Po-Li. Some Arabic writing at the beginning of the ninth century, and the inscription was later found in India mentioned areas. In 1292, Marco Polo, on his journey from China to Persia visited Sumatra and reported that in the northern part of Sumatra, there were six trading ports including Ferlec, Ocean and Lambri. It is ironic that this area is currently one of the most well known in Indonesia.

Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam


Islam is reported to have reached the province between the seventh and eighth centuries AD and the first Islamic empire, founded in 804 AD Perlak. Then followed Samudera Pasai in 1042, Tamiah in 1184, Aceh Darussalam in 1205 and in 1511. In this year the Portuguese captured Malacca and many Asian and Arab traders trying to avoid the Straits of Malacca and called instead on port Aceh, bringing wealth and prosperity. Aceh dominance in trade and politics in the north of Sumatra began, reaching a climax between 1610 and 1640.

With the death of Sultan Iskandar Thani in 1641, a decrease of Aceh begins. Britain and the Netherlands both began competing for influence. In 1824 the London Agreement was signed, giving the Dutch control over all the British possessions in Sumatra in exchange for the Dutch surrender their establishment in India and the lifting of all claims in Singapore. Dutch fought a long drawn out struggle in their attempts to conquer Aceh. Aceh War, which lasted intermittently 1873-1942, was the longest ever fought by the Netherlands and the Netherlands cost more than 10,000 lives. This struggle has been branded a deep imprint on the outlook and mentality of Aceh.

Industrialization era arrived, and with it has come a more open attitude towards things foreign. Visitors should keep in mind, though, that Aceh take their religion, their behavior and their moral seriously.

Entry

Banda Aceh only forty-five minute flight from Medan. If you are departing from Singapore or Kuala Lumpur, it's better if you use a connecting flight to Medan and then to Banda Aceh. If you need to depart from Jakarta, the flight will take about two and a half hour from the airport, Soekarno Hatta Airport (CGK).

People & Culture

Banda Aceh, capital of Aceh province, is 18.5 Km from the site dand takes about 20 minutes by car. Local International Airport is approximately 30 minutes away by car. Many surfers around the world often near the village LhokNga during the winter moth. Climate after 10:00 it gets pretty hot but rarely-over 30ยบ C in the shade.
